The estate in a few words

Property of the Dukes of Magenta family, who came all the way from Ireland to Burgundy, around 1740. The Abbey’s vineyard was planted by Cistercian Burgundy monks in the 12th century. In the 15th century the village of Chassagne-Montrachet was devastated by the king-of-France’s troops. The chapel and the bread oven were the only things left from the abbey. Now the estate is run by the Scottish-born duchess of Magenta.

This vineyard covers 22 acres with 85 % of chardonnay and 15 % of pinot noir. Vines are between 20 and 70 years old and trained in single “cane pruning” for whites and “spur pruning” for reds.

We practice a sustainable viticulture  (organic enrichments but no chemical fertilizers). We do mechanical weeding and the grapes are hand-picked.

As to winemaking, we vinify using natural yeasts. Maturing at the Morgeot Abbey or at the Castle of Sully is long : from 12 to 24 months in French oak casks (around 10 % of new oak). Bottling takes place at the estate, or at the Morgeot Abbey or at the Castle of Sully. The wines are usually sold after four years of storage. Keeping wines then.

Your favourite quality in a woman

A tender and comprehensive judgement toward others

    Your favourite activity

Cook a meal with a nice bottle with friends or family

    Your best wine-related memory

My daughter’s first tasting and that look on her small face : a drop of our white Abbaye de Morgeot from her father’s finger, just a few hours after her birth at the Beaune maternity hospital.

    Your best wine-related encounter

The bishop of Brentwood in England, Thomas Mac Mahon.

    Your funniest anecdote

Although I’m Scottish, English is my mothertongue. One day, a little time after I came to Burgundy, 25 years ago, my husband asked me to take an English customer for a barrel tasting. I  had some difficulties as I didn’t know the English terms for  topping the barrel, picking, cask, vine stock, racking… when we finished, he complimented my husband about my English : “You know, her english is really good. If she took a few classes she would speak almost fluently.”

    Your favourite wine/wine producing area

Our white Abbaye de Morgeot but the other day I tasted a red one from 1970 which was extraordinary.

Your motto or your favourite quote

“here I stand, here I remain”
