Domaine Michel Martin in a few words

Third generation of winegrowers, my husband took over the family estate in 2003 with a vineyard of 11 acres. I joined him soon after, but it was a total change for me, so I did a winemaking and viticulture training course in Beaune in 2004 (Estate Management Certificate).

The small size of the estate gave us the opportunity to monitor the process from vine to wine, including the commercial aspect ; thus we could comprehend the whole diversity and complexity of the job. Our will to make wine as naturally as possible, led us from sustainable viticulture to organic viticulture (certification in 2012). Our guideline has always been : making burgundy wines that express the typicity of the land (and respecting pinot noir).

Still unspoiled, our passion –and our quest for quality– pushes us to progress with regular investments (press, sorting table, new type of filter…), a thorough work in the vineyard (progressively raising the trellis height, replanting ; ploughing, hand-picking with 15 kg cases…) but also participating in workgroups, coupled with tastings and exchanging with other producers.

Our taste for entertainment, and the will to share our passion also led us to open a guesthouse within our Estate, a true openness to the world. I particularly appreciate the richness of encounters and exchanges that wine arouses and fosters. We develop domestic and export markets.

  • Interview with Chantal Martin

Your favourite quality in a woman
Open-mindedness. I admire the tireless character, determination, and the ability to move forward.

    Your favourite activity
Reading ; spending time with the family; discovering, tasting and sharing good wines.

    Your best wine-related memory
    Family dinners with beautiful wines.

    Your best wine-related encounter
hard to pick, I have many. A nice encounter, just as brief as memorable, with the sommelier Alain Ronzatti (Maison Michel Rostang, Paris) open-minded and passionate ; exceptionally courteous.

    Your funniest anecdote
rather a tip of the hat to Ola Bergman, a suedish photographer, as one of the best website on Burgundy came out of her passion (www.bourgogne-info.eu).

    Your favourite wine/wine producing area
I like to discover wines, their region and their producers… But I remain attached to Burgundy.  I like generous but delicate wines ; a Chambolle Musigny probably…

Your motto or your favourite quote
Here are some :“He who can taste, never drinks wine anymore but tastes secrets” S. Dali      “It’s because wine is a man’s creation that it is fragile, but always perfectible…” E. Peynaud

In a more straightforward style but with a hint of truth : “A wine must look like the place where it was born, and have the guts of the man who made it” J.Puisais.
